Loved this hotel - after all the rain while in Venice in May 2019 it was our saving grace! Have some beautiful photos but not sure how to share?
Our favorite boutique hotel in Venice! A charming location, away from the hustle & bustle of St. Marks Square but still close enough to walk. The palazzo details are majestic, and the bathroom amenities were unmatched. The service was exceptional and the free breakfast delicious. We decided to upgrade to a Deluxe Room and it was well worth it.
In January of this year we booked our Venice honeymoon week at the Nani Mocenigo Palace. Obviously this was before the Covid-19 and we paid in full our reservation. For the last 10 months we were in contact by mail with the hotel and they were well informed of our special occasion. Before Venice we also spent a week in beautiful Rome, and stayed in another 4 star hotel that surprised us with an amazing room set up (Red roses, Chocolates and Prosecco wine waiting for us), maybe they went overboard but it was nicely appreciated. They understood that during this tough time, guests who will come to Italy and stay for one week (1800 Euros), should be taken care of. Now let’s review what happened or not happened at Nani Mocenigo Palace in Venice.
Let’s start with the CONS:
1. They didn’t recognize our emails mentioning it’s our honeymoon trip. No welcome card, or “enjoy your honeymoon” greetings. We were only expecting some kind of acknowledgment, a signed note from the GM and team would have done it…NOTHING ELSE.
2. We were told upon check in that our room was being upgraded for free. This was a lie, we paid for it! We were supposed to stay for 7 nights, but our airline cancelled our flight and moved us to 1 day earlier so we had to shorten our stay. Since they couldn’t give us the refund (flight cancelation is not our fault), they offered to upgrade our room instead. So no, it was not a free upgrade! (So bad)
3. Our upgraded room was literally a shoe-box. It is spacious, indeed, but feel stuffy with the low ceiling, no window and no air-conditioner. What they call ‘window’ is in fact, facing a wall within 50 cm and the outdoor unit heater box. (Welcome to Venice)
4. We asked to speak to the General Manager but apparently this property doesn’t have one. We feel that this place is running in auto-pilot mode and definitely on the budget. Of course everything is blamed on the Covid-19.
5. The bellman (An older gentleman ) who doesn’t speak English or didn’t want to try . Explained everything in the room in Italian. I mean… it’s a 4 stars hotel in Venice! Sorry we do not speak the language (I didn’t know we have to apologize to be a foreign tourist )
The PROs:
1. Yasmin the only waitress/manager in the restaurant at breakfast time (We were told that was part of the cost saving measures due to very low occupancy (20%-30%). She’s the only star in this establishment. Two days later she send us a bottle of red wine after she learned that we are on our honeymoon. Definitely a nice gesture and well appreciated.
2. Mihai was nice to offer us to move to a better room after 2 nights, but no, at that stage we didn’t feel like moving to another room. They should have thought about this before our arrival. They have plenty of available rooms! Seriously, the place is so quiet that you feel totally uncomfortable. Very strange.
3. Mihai and Sofia helped us to arrange for our swab tests done at a local clinic. Necessary steps to go back to Indonesia.
And of course, everything is due to the pandemic (eye-rolls). On check-out day we had a chance to speak to the operation manager who was the only person behind the reception and handled our departure. We expressed our disappointment and he told us “that Venice is used to millions of people coming in and out every day and no-one gives a damn about giving service to their guests”. It is sad but it is the reality. Well, COVID-19 should give them time to re-think all of that!
My husband and I, are both working in the hospitality industry. We are used to the clients’ with high expectations, and certainly we understand the standard of service to be given. To find this kind of industry behaviour, is really just sad.
If or when we ever come back to Venice, we will not stay in this hotel again. That is for sure!
Phenomenal hotel. Stayed there for my honeymoon, wife loved it! Premium rooms, while a little cozy were great. I thought the location was great easy walking to a vaporetto so easy getting in and out of venice. 100% would stay again and recommend
The most enjoyable stay. Extremely well located. Beautiful room and bathroom with a view. Most generous and friendly staff. Will definitely be coming back.
