Do yourself a favour and stay far away, especially as a woman (continued below)
I booked into this hostel after seeing it online and being rather charmed by the rustic wooden cabins stacked around the central pool, they looked to be inviting and cosy, small and perfectly formed. Feeling confident this was what I was looking for during an extended stay in Tulum I paid in cash for three nights. I regretted this decision almost immediately. From issues with cleanliness and upkeep, to a toxic atmosphere, there are far, far better places to stay at a lower cost.
The cabins that had so enamoured me transpired to be leaky, loud and damp-feeling affairs; the sponge mattress drenched in the sweat of travellers past; the easy access for mosquitos provided by large, uncovered holes throughout the cabin and the constant low-fidelity, high-volume ‘music’ from the hostel’s speaker system. Music is played from early morning through to early morning, and is some of the most banal and irritating music you could care to come by. The cabins provide absolutely no sound insulation. This, coupled with the gaggle of staff who sit around smoking weed, hitting on you if you are a woman and largely ignoring you if you are male, creates an air of lazy hostility and lack of interest in providing a space that could be described as friendly or welcoming. Ricardo was an exception to this, providing genuine care and friendliness to all, as far as I witnessed.
There was one beleaguered-looking female cleaner, the rest were men who were clearly very impressed with themselves and their little misogynistic empire they had built.
Breakfast looked to be a rather unhygienic offering, along with a constant lack of soap and toilet paper in the bathrooms making for an altogether unappealing place to spend time, let alone eat.
Finally, I heard from several friends in the area after I had booked and spent my first night there who had awful experiences here with regards to disturbing sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour from both staff and the owner. After staying here I can see how the culture of the hostel would support this type of behaviour.
It wouldn’t take much for this place to become a very special place to stay. A well-thought out and appropriately volumed playlist, a more thorough approach to providing a clean environment and a complete change in both management and staff. Whilst this doesn’t happen it will remain a predatory, sad and depressing offering that has the air of somewhere that used to be the place to be, but the party is now over. Now it feels as if it’s just the guys who don’t know when to call it a night hanging around, whilst the Ché Hostel next door genuinely seems to have a good vibe and party energy to it.
If you are looking to meet new people and have some fun, like older reviews on here have suggested you can get at this hostel, go to Ché. Or go anywhere else. Just don’t come here.
First of all there is so loud you can't sleep. Rooms you get are made from really thick wood, so it is just illusion of the privacy. That's why you hear everything. Unfortunately just behind the hostel is a place in which really loud music plays from every evening till late night hours. It's not possible to sleep, trust me. If you want to rest it's better not to choose this hostel. However, hostel as a place is really nice. You have kitchen with most amenities, nice place to seat to eat and chat. Staff is friendly and helpful.
