Reviews from visitors:
We stayed in a 2 room condo & it was perfect for four people. The location was perfect and the shuttle to the ski mountain was prompt and never crowded. The kids loved the pool and game room. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and cozy. Couldn't have asked for anything more.
First, I recognize this is a 3-star rated hotel. I am not expecting a 5-star hotel for 3-star money. We were really disappointed for some very specific reasons. First, the photos are amazing while the actual room finishes are worn, carpet old, partially operating window blinds, felt cheap.
Second, the staff, every one of the staff including the front desk spoke broken English, or no English at all. We've rented from Legacy in Orlando (great spot) and when the phone doesn't answer at the Hilltop, the phone gets picked up in the Orlando Central Office. However, the Orlando folks really don't know the specifics of the Hilltop property, they are 2,000 miles away. Hospitable, but not that helpful.
Third, there is an access road from the highway up to the "hill top." It was covered in ice and snow (yes, this IS Colorado). We managed our way up to the hotel in our FWD rented Ford. Not too difficult. When we went out to dinner however, the same ice and snow was unforgiving going down the hill. We LOST CONTROL of the car at 5 mph! I'm from up North, so I know how to attempt to correct in this type of condition. I was barely able to steer the spinning car into a snow bank and stop. No damage, no injuries. We WERE going really slow when the car went out of control. So, we dug the car out, parked and asked to take the shuttle into town. HERE IS THE FRUSTRATING PART.....the shuttle turned out of the parking lot and made an immediate right into a residential neighborhood with clean, dry streets. The driver avoided the hotel's front access road and went about 2-miles out of his way to avoid it. WOULDN'T THAT BE A GOOD TIP FOR GUESTS WITH CARS?
Other than these issues that detracted from the enjoyment of Steamboat Springs, the staff were courteous, the shuttles were accessible and we made the best of the accomodations.
Barely any cooking pans or pots, no dishwasher, the game room was depressing. We got charged a resort fee after our stay for games and pool that we 1 didn’t get to use and 2 already paid for. Don’t have “pool and hot tub included” and then up charge after the stay. Isn’t that why you charge what you charge a night for all of the amenities the hotel has to offer? The whole building is outdated and old. Bad lighting in the rooms as well. The free resort shuttle driver always expected a tip (putting his hand out as if we were supposed to automatically give it to him) and seemed mad when he didn’t receive one. Definitely choosing a different stay next time.
Absolutely terrible customer service. I booked a reservation for two nights at this place for Presidents Day weekend and I ruptured my Achilles Tendon less than 3 hours later. I tried to cancel the reservation immediately, less than 24 hours after booking it and they refused to refund me the money. Airlines have a 24 hour grace period how does a small resort in Colorado not have the same?!? I have a doctor's note and picture proof of the injury and begged them to issue me a refund, but instead was tossed back and forth between VRBO customer service and Legacy resort customer service. Both stated that it was the responsibility of the other to pay the refund. They were rude and not willing to listen at all. I have never been treated so poorly in my life. I will never book with this resort company ever again and will make sure my friends and family do not either.
I would give it zero starts if I could.
update: after two days they fixed the hot tubs. The facilities are a little dated but the kitchen is nice to have for covid and longer stays, no dishwasher though. The views are nice and the rooms are basic but cozy.
Hot tubs are tepid and very disappointing. Could have booked ski in ski out for the same price but went here to sit in a cold hot tub. Complaining did nothing to resolve the issue.
