Reviews from visitors:
Visited a friend for an afternoon. Lots of natural light, refrigerator, queen size bed, private bathroom, 1 chair, no desk or table but small counter substitute with coffeemaker. It's clean and attractive with a bit of contemporary style. One brick wall, one muted medium blue, two creamy white. Enough space that three of us could socially distance 10 feet apart.
I made a reservation for what looked like a fun hotel. During the reservation process and subsequent emails, check-in was listed as " starting at 9am". Check-out at 11am.
When I called the hotel the day before,
and the office was closed at 7pm, I went to the website. There was an added paragraph in yellow that said that due to covid 19, check-in was only between 1-3pm. No check in after. When I had to cancel my reservation because I could not arrive by 3pm, they thought I should still pay for my reservation! I received no communication about the changes to check-in time. Luckily, the 3rd party service I used, refunded my money completely, and helped me get another hotel room. I wish I'd been able to stay.
I was chewed up by bed bugs. After snooping a bit, I found that Iam not the first victim of bed bugs at The Herbert Hotel. They offered me 15% off my stay. The room below me had a sign on the door that stated that pest control was not to enter due to a sensitive tenant. Clearly, pest control is not effective. I can handle a lot, I don’t need to stay somewhere fancy. But if you wouldn’t sleep there or let your sleep there because you know there are bed bugs, how are you going to charge me and let me go through the agonizing pain of bed bug bites?!?! I am aware of the difficulties there are in the industry right now, but this was unacceptable. If it smells weird, it is probably the pesticides. If you are waking up to welts that were not there before you went to bed, guaranteed it is their bed bugs! Years ago I lived in an apartment that had bed bugs and the bites I sustained at The Herbert Hotel were much more plentiful than in that past experience. I would strongly recommend standing somewhere else. I would not trust The Herbert Hotel to be free of bed bugs and if you run into problems with pests, you may just be stuck!
Locations is good. A lot places you can walk to from the hotel. When I first arrived the radiator was on full blast steaming into the curtain. I thought that was odd and the curtains could be shortened. The room felt like a sauna so I left it off the rest of the stay. As a young woman traveling alone in the city I didn’t like the doors didn’t have an extra lock on them like most hotel rooms. In fact it took me a couple tries to figure out how to lock the door properly. I’m really glad I paid for private bathroom. I believe that could be easily missed upon booking so if you aren’t open to that, make sure to book a room with a private bathroom. The fan & light system kind of had a mind of its own. On the welcome sheet it said that there was a remote to use to control the fan / light which I never found a separate remote just the wall panel. I’m not sure if the light was picking up another room remote signal but sometimes the main light would turn on and off on it’s own. Besides the fan, I didn’t notice any type of AC system so I’m not sure if I could stay here in the summer. The room was extremely warm every time I came back to the room but cooled down when I opened the window. The elevators works... but sounds like it’s falling apart, so if you get Claustrophobic or agoraphobic I would recommend taking the stairs. Although for the price this stay was fine, I do think there could be several improvements.
It was a good location and the staff was pretty friendly. Cons are that we were promised breakfast upon reserving and when we showed up we were told there is none. We got no reimbursement for us having to buy our own. We should have been told upon booking. Also the tv was not working in our room. They replaced batteries in a remote which fixed the issue for about 30 minutes then the tv stopped responding. The walls are very thin, we could hear everyone’s conversations. And luckily we were not staying in the middle of summer because there is no AC. Just a fan. Lastly, we only got one key. That was a bit inconvenient also with two people. Overall I would not stay here again.
