This location is dangerous. I was told by many police that passed by outside the doors to be careful and to not go a certain way on the street. Just outside the door of the hostel I had two guys try to rob me. The hostel door is locked and they buzz you in, thankfully someone was there to quickly ring me in and I closed the door behind me. You can see the area looks bad when you look left down the street and you hear the people making trouble at night.
Hostel is cold. You will have a difficult time to get a warm shower as they have to often flip the switch. Hostel is a cool old building but not much of a social environment, especially during Covid.
If you read the other 1 and 2 star reviews, they experience similar problems as well. Especially with it being an unsafe neighborhood.
Update to my previous review: The hostel sent me an email labeled as an invoice, with a total amount and a cost for cancellation, which I did not make. I have since been in contact with the hostel and we cleared things up. Wording needs to be changed on their end as giving someone an invoice and a total amount would lead to believe it’s a bill.
I reserved the basic standard room and it was clean with a comfortable bed. Miguel was very helpful throughout my stay. The breakfast was delicious and the staff were friendly. The building has some old architecture which makes your stay really unique! Keep in mind that if you need to enter or exit the hostel at anytime before 8:00am or after 10:00pm you must use WhatsApp to call/text staff to let you in because the lobby isn't staffed during these hours and the hostel is locked. This keeps the hostel secure after hours. I had a great stay and would recommend to anyone not looking for something fancy or have high expectations. The hostel is simple, clean, friendly, and relaxing!
Wonderful staff, amazing location, gorgeous facility! Absolutely loved my stay at the Masaya. The individual rooms and bathrooms were huge and the prices were great. The breakfast was also delicious! Great walking distance into Old Town Quito (just a few blocks). Overall amazing stay and I will definitely be back! Thank you Masaya!
Really great experience. Private rooms are super nice with great showers. Staff super friendly and helpful. This place will be epic during non-pandemic
Its a really nice hostel and building. I stayed two nights but couldn’t sleep because the windows don’t isolate any noise at all. I changed the room but same there. Get yourself new windows!
