Reviews from visitors:
This is a general review pertaining to the Riu chain in Mexico. Riu strives for a reputation as a quality resort chain and there’s a lot that they do right...a decent variety of dining options and shared amenities with other local Riu resorts are among the highlights.
But I’m watching this branding trend by the suits that takes the entire chain down a couple notches. They’ve launched into a series of facility remodels—which were probably needed—in which they’re taking all individual character and any Mexican flavor out of their properties.
Look at older pics of the Riu Yucatán and you’ll see brightly colored buildings. Now every Riu in Mexico has a stark white industrial facade. The guest room interiors are also all white. It’s as though they allowed someone with no aptitude for design play with the palette.
And I’m fairly certain that Riu Yucatán is the last of the Rius with a free-form main pool. All newly built pools are rectangular, which I’m pretty sure one can head to their local rec center to find. I sense that Riu management won’t be happy till every Riu property looks like every other Riu property—completely generic.
Maybe they’re catering to a futuristic clientele with a passion for angles. I just know that what beckons me to Mexico year after year is the land and the people and the colorful style of their art and architecture. Riu is for travelers who like to imagine they could be anywhere in the world.
We stayed 3 nights at this beautiful resort. Weather was perfect and the beach area was fantastic. Was truly about a 4.5 star experience. Rooms were a little dated and food was pretty good, but everything else was close to perfect.
The worst hotel I have ever been to.
1. Horrible rooms with safety and health hazard: black mold all over the shower cabin, power sockets with hanging out wires, water dropping down from the ceiling.
The personal doesn’t give a dime about you or your needs, you can await for a waiter for 40 minutes which makes it easier to go and get your own utensils or napkin or whatever you need. The food has no diversity and every day is the same exact thing, besides everything is either too dry or too salty.
Kids parties are horrible, the literally throu the children out of the stage if they dare to come up for a second.
Birds and stray cats are all over the restaurants.
Overall if you are willing to spend your valuable vacation in the place like cheap motel this place is exactly for you!
This place is above and beyond, we just came back from Mexico and we stayed here for a week, we had a great experience. The staff and food are amazing, every day our room was super clean, nothing went missing, we definitely had a great experience at Riu Yucatan. They have monkeys, the beach is great, staff is absolutely friendly and very helpful, I was treated like a queen in this place and can’t wait to go back.
Who ever is rating this place at 4.5 stars clearly has not been to a nice resort. It's filthy and looks nothing like the pictures. This place deserves one star because management was nice.
