We visited in Jan 2020 and had the best time. Amazing food, staff and location. Can't wait to go back.
2 Reina Roja Hotel

Strange hotel. However the rooftop swimming pool is great. Food is average. Place is nice and clean.
3 Playa 38 Hotel Boutique

I definitely recommend this hotel to everyone.
Cheap, clean and very welcoming.
The guy at the front desk, Ruben, very nice, friendly and available for any kind of advices about places and things to do.
4 Illusion Boutique Hotel

2 nights into my 8 night stay and already looking to leave. The first night the air conditioner was leaking a steady flow of water all of the counter. The receptionist gave me a bucket, so i got to listen to that all night. Maintenance came this morning and “fixed” the issue, but now the AC is stuck on full blast and it is FREEZING. I told the receptionist and he told me he will call maintenance in the morning again. I asked for an extra blanket and he offered me towels.
Edit: after my third night one of the employees, Mario who is a great man, upgraded our room and made our stay much better
5 Magic Blue Spa Boutique Hotel Playa del Carmen

Calm and super beautiful boutique hotel, perfect for relaxing. The staff makes you feel very welcoming and are super kind. We loved how they made it like a small village around the pool area, looking like all small bungalows. Each has it own small porch with a hammock. Everything is clean and comfortable. Location is perfect, in the middle of the strip with all restaurants and bars. Breakfast of the hotel is from an outsourcing restaurant that is connected to it. Service was outstanding as well, the only thing that could be improved are more vegan options instead of only fruit and basic salad ingredients. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this place.

Place is amazing and it is so clean. Prices were good and I highly recommend the all inclusive it was $50/night per person all you can eat and drink all day. The rooftop is the best part. The only thing I didn’t like was they didn’t really have “3” restaurants it’s like two rooms with different menu options all out of the same kitchen. The one is Italian food which is open every other night, other is Mexican open every night and the last is Asian open opposite from Italian food. The menu is Small and the food was mediocre. The breakfast is very good though. The food on the rooftop is amazing but be prepared to wait like an hour or two for food so order a lot. The people who work there are very accommodating and friendly. The service is top notch! Very close walk to the beach. I recommend not leaving the resorts too much as it can be dangerous and a lot of hassle walking around having people trying to sell one stuff. Don’t expect any sleep if you’re facing the street there is a bar downstairs that blasts music so loud the door shakes until all hours of the night.

Great hotel I would definitely stay at again. Staff were exceptional.
Great location, just around the corner from 5th Avenue shopping and restaurants and just a bit further down the beach.
Pool area was great, lots of sunbeds with towels. Rooms were clean and the beds were super comfy.
The free breakfast was anything spectacular but filled the spot.
8 IT Hotel Playa

Great service. We seitched rooms after the first one had some light and mpise coming in
The woman at the reception was super nice and helpful.
We like this place, quiet and good located, just few steps from beach or 5th avenue.
9 Le Reve Boutique Beachfront Hotel

images
We were there on a day use only, so did not stay, but found it to be a good value for 300 pesos per person. They gave us $300 for food and alcohol, and we had a nice private cabana with a great view along a coastline that is so much different than Puerto Morelos where we live. Food in the restaurant was mediocre, but that is not their thing, so will allow some latitude.

Fantastic hotel. Service was excellent and Yaun was very helpful, friendly, and professional. The room was very clean and spacious and the bathroom was huge. The room had a huge bathtub with jets like a jacuzzi. The location was terrific, walking distance from numerous restaurants and stores. The hotel has a beautiful rooftop pool, lounge, and bar. The hotel also has a sushi bar/ restaurant on the first floor. The style/atmosphere of the hotel combines a retro and classic style with a hipster vibe. The low lighting of the hotel gives it a very romantic and intimate feel. The hotel is 4 stories high. There is street parking but you have to pay. This is also one of the few hotels in the town that is family/kid-friendly, as many of the hotels are adults only. Overall, I was very pleased with my stay. I highly recommend.
11 The Green Village Eco Boutique Hotel

images
A great hotel with good vibes and a lovely staff. I stayed here for a month. It's just a walking distance to all the cafes, bars and restaurants, but still a bit away from the hustle and bustle. The rooms are spacious and well equipped. Good rates especially for long term renters. I highlight recommend this hotel to open-minded travelers and also for those who want to stay a little bit longer in Playa del Carmen and therefore search for a place which feels a little bit like a home.
13 Hotel Boutique Kinta Kan - Adults Only

images
Location is perfect. Staff is friendly.
Accommodation coincides with the price.
Some misleading information on the photos. Consists of two parts on both sides of the street. The pool part is renovated and in good condition. The other needs work. Some raccoon presence - normal for this part of Mexico.
Overall good for the money.
14 La Pasión Hotel Boutique

images
The location is great! Very close to the main street but far enough so it's not loud during the night. The staff was super friendly and everything was clean and very well kept. Would totally recommend it to anyone looking for a getaway in Playa del Carmen at a great price.
15 Caribbean Paradise Boutique Hotel

images
Very comfy and clean room! Reception was friendly and helpful. The jacuzzi didn't work properly and honestly wasn't really worth it. Would just go for a simple room and you'll be very happy.
16 Isabella Boutique Hotel

images
If you are looking to be pampered Isabella is not for you. But if you are looking for a quiet stay, close to the beach, clean accommodations with kind staff, you will enjoy La Isabella.
17 Marvic Hotel Boutique

Brand new hotel. Super nice! Super clean, staff are super nice, helpful and knowledgeable! Highly recommend!!
18 Thompson Playa Del Carmen Beach House

Loved this place. My wife and I came here on a Saturday. Chilled in a daybed, awesome DJ, amazing service, good food and drinks, really nice pool and easy access to ocean. Have to spend 600 pesos per person which isn't bad compared to other spots. I would definitely come here again.
19 La Leyenda Hotel

images
Guy at service desk was the best and very hard working had to tip him well
20 Viceroy Riviera Maya

images
Spent the most amazing time here. Villas, pools, and the spa are great. But what really stands out is the incredibly attentive staff that went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. Also, I am pretty sure they have actual wizards working in the kitchen. Can’t wait to go again!
I do my best to keep this list very up to date. It was last edited in March 2025. If you know of a hipster hotel that should be on the list, let me know. Click here to contact me. Thanks!
