Reviews from visitors:
They say that a business is only as good as the people that represent it. Well, if this really is the case the Windsor Hotel is in dire straights. We came for 4 nights via booking.com. We arrived early (11am) and were met by a reasonable lady who let us check our bags in but we had to go away for the day until 3pm when we could check in. Not a massive problem. On arrival, it was clear that this hotel was emblematic of bygone days and was designed around decadence. Lots of fancy trim featuring golden pineapples everywhere. The walls are also testament to 18th and 19th century England and more concerning than the old fashioned trim, to Fox Hunting and it's proponents. A little out of Vogue to say the least. Next to the things that people take for granted. A kettle with cups, tea or coffee and uht milk? No. Not provided. Instead you have to order tea from reception which is chargeable. Unless it's after 10pm when the stroppy concierge flatly refuses to boil the kettle. How un English!!
On our first day we opted for the hotel breakfast which was also chargeable. It was decent and worth 9 euros each. Day 2 was a different lady. We arrived in reception at exactly the time booked. She was clearly flustered and was less than pleased to see us. She asked us to go back to our room and to come back in 30 minutes. This we did. She was still having a bad day and it really was a shame that she showed this off to the customers. There was no bacon. I mentioned this and none came. The lady the previous day had made lovely scrambled eggs with bacon bits. We didn't ask for this but it was much appreciated. Flustered, grumpy lady didn't provide this. It was a less than average breakfast for 9 euros. Went somewhere else next day. Several times during our stay we met the evening concierge. A hipster with perfect hair and big turned up trousers. I think he may have a short fuse or perhaps bi polar as his manor could either be accommodating or damned right rude in the space of 5 minutes. For example we ordered black tea (chargeable) to our room and he gave us earl grey. I can't drink that so took it back to reception and explained the problem. I know Covid means that masks often hide one's expressions, but he might as well have stuck his fingers up at me. Then we got and paid the bill. We were overcharged by 36 euros. My wife and I went to reception to explain the error and to ask for a partial refund. Irate would be the best word to describe his behaviour. He was incredibly rude towards us both (like Basil Fawlty) and stormed off into his room. He then appeared 5 minutes later with a moderated approach to their obvious error. I don't think that many of the staff here are best suited to hospitality! The hotel is nicely located near the centre of town and is near the railway line. We had room 10 by reception and this was lovely and quiet. Nice size, clean, lovely bathroom. I asked for some harder pillows as the ones provided were the softest and least supportive pillows that I have used in 51 years of excellent sleeps. Our convivial concierge frankly laughed at me!! Fair enough. The Premier Inn is a 2 minute walk away and is probably more suited to the needs and expectations of 21st century hospitality. Who knew that an Englishmans tea requirements could cause such constipation? Do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else!
Unfriendly staff. Not having the mentality to serve the customers
Good experience and nice bed. Room a bit cold and could use better pillows
I had a lovely night in that hotel. The staff was absolutely brilliant, the room was very nice and the breakfast was really tasty! The only downside was its closeness to the rail tracks- you could hear the rumble of the trains in the morning, so if you’re a light sleeper you may need some earplugs.
Great hotel! Beautiful clean and cozy. We really enjoyed our stay. Great value for money
