Reviews from visitors:
I made my hotel reservation months ago via United's website so I could use United airline miles. It was a non-refundable reservation for 3 nights in June 2020. It was an expensive room. So then a global pandemic strikes. Now we cannot go because:
1) Delta cancelled our flights; and
2) My husband is an "essential hospital worker", by law. He cannot go on vacation now as he literally runs the entire medical staff of a hospital dealing with a pandemic.
I can provide written proof to the hotel of these events, no problem.
So after I told the hotel and United hotels, well in advance, that we could not go on our trip, Hotel Cardinal acknowledged the cancellation and said something about how we can re-book within 18 months and still use our payment towards the new reservation. Also, United hotels told us it was up to the hotel to decide what to do about our reservation...reinstate miles, give voucher, or whatever. After I asked Hotel Cardinal more about the 18-month plan per their previous email, their story changed! Now the hotel says because I booked through Expedia, I have to cancel and rebook through Expedia. I did not use Expedia...I booked through United.
I suspect this hotel is trying to just pocked the money for our unused room and give me the runaround on their 18-month offer to re-book. I have now asked to speak to a higher up manager for assistance.
Let me just say that every other hotel, cruise, car rental company on this trip has been very accommodating on the situation, except HOTEL CARDINAL. They have the worst customer service I have ever seen from any hotel. And they are a rather expensive hotel who should be operating at a classier level.
After staying 2 nights last week at Hotel Cardinal, I do want to start positive by saying the staff was top notch, professional, friendly and courteous, and most accommodating. However, as a very seasoned traveler for the past 20 years, with over a thousand hotel stays under my belt, this easily was one of the top 3 most disappointing experiences to date.
We checked in with 2 other couples, and when the staff walked us to our room, we opened the door and were greeted with nothing short of a strong sewer-like smell. We were told it was because the windows were open and the smell from the river (?) but outside the air smelled fine so that didn't seem to add up. We went to dinner with our friends and when we came back, they also came up to our room, took 2 steps in, and said absolutely not, the smell is unbearable. So we went down and asked to be moved to another room. We were moved to a room with maybe 50% less smell, but it was under the eaves of the roof and we spent the next 2 days hunched over so as not to keep hitting our head on the ceiling, and the room was so dark I had to use my Iphone light to put on my makeup and curl my hair both mornings. It was a miserable experience to say the least. Both of the other couples had rooms that had some sewer smell for sure but not overwhelming, and were normal rooms by most standards. To add to the frustration, we actually paid more for our room than our friends and we all booked at the same time.
While the website looks like this amazing boutique hotel, be careful what your expectations are. The hotel staff is well aware of the awful smell, with candles in the room (no hotel does that, obviously to cover the smell) and incense burning in the lobby to also try to cover it up. I would suggest asking to see your room first upon check in.
Chic boutique hotel with excellent location. Only downside was the small bathroom, it was hard to fit all of our toiletries. Otherwise a great choice in Bordeaux!
Beautiful Hotel in a beautiful city. The staff could not do enough for us. We were lucky enough to stay in the cardinal suite which was a great well designed suite. 5/5
Beautifully-designed rooms: the "signature" suite had a small but hypercool matte-black kitchen, and the room's shelves were stocked with interesting art books and classic French texts. In addition to the friendly front desk manager, we appreciated the beautiful and delicious breakfast service, which was quietly left for us in the living room while we slept in. The hotel is located right off of Bordeaux's main cathedral - right in the middle of things.
