Reviews from visitors:
I love historic hotels, and have stayed in beautiful hotels across the country. The Driskill is disguised as a charming 4 star historic Austin hotel, but in reality is a tourist thirst trap where guests are bait and switched. I booked this room on Amex travel, as I do all of my hotels. They offer a Queen Room (Petite) 250 sq ft as their lowest price point and then up from there. I booked up the next level for a higher price for the “king or queen” room with 300 sq ft.
Upon arriving check in the receptionist informed us that there was construction going on and there would be noise starting at 8 am. Disappointment 1. We were looking forward to a relaxing stay and sleeping in.
We get up to our floor, where the room number, 512, is not listed on the directional directory. After looking around a bit, it was the room right beside the elevator behind us in the hallway.
Entering that room was the worst hotel experience I have had to date. They put us in a room that was no bigger than 100 sq ft. THERE WERE NO WINDOWS. You could barely walk around the bed, where there was a bathroom that had a sealed shut stained glass window that was reminiscent of prison bars. There was no way to look out of the room, no natural light, and the claustrophobia was setting in.
I called concierge who explained “this room isn’t representative of the hotels features”. As the website, and booking details clearly show rooms with a WINDOW and some space to walk around. They agreed to “upgrade” us to a different room.
We got put in a different room that was exactly represented in what we booked. A normal hotel room with a window. Nothing special, no city view, etc... Just exactly what I had paid for.
Upon checking out the sir asked us how our stay was and I told him I was disappointed in the first room. He rudely said that “was what we booked” and they graciously upgraded us. I showed him my reservation details where it shows I booked and paid for a room that included a WINDOW, a queen OR KING bed, and was at least 300 sq ft. He then said you can’t “trust” third party sites to book. I said that the EXACT same offering, price and pictures were on their website, and I paid extra for a higher grade room than their “petite” which still shows a room with a WINDOW. He was very unprofessional and made it seem like it was our fault we didn’t like the room that was 100% non representative of what they sell to their guests on the website.
They attempt to pawn off these horrible rooms they’ve turned janitors closets into to make a buck. Never, ever again.
Wonderful historic hotel located close to the Capitol and walking distance to so many other destinations.
The 1886 Bakery / Restaurant is great for breakfast. They even have Texas shaped Belgian waffles!
We have always wanted to stay here, so we recently splurged for our anniversary.
It was well worth it.
The service is excellent and everyone is very friendly.
Beautiful hotel. Very ornate. Gorgeous stonework, amazing woodwork, and some impressive glasswork as well. Numerous interesting pieces of history on display practically anywhere you look. Very fancy! A bit on the pricey side but we'll worth it in my opinion.
I was super excited to stay here. I love historic & haunted stays and the hotel is beautiful. Main site and booking sites all say “Pet Friendly,” however when I arrived with my trained ESA cat, travel litter box/supplies all in hand, I was turned away. Although Hyatt apparently allows cats at some of their hotels, not at the Driskill. And this information is not listed readily, why write “pet friendly” when you actually just mean dogs??
I was left stranded in their lobby with my luggage & cat. Thankfully a nearby hotel allowed cats and had room availability.
Beautiful historic hotel. I had a couple of accommodation requests and they were met without any difficulty. Rooms are smaller than typical hotel rooms, but thats common for historic hotels. I didn't request a room with a view so my view was of rooftops and The Aloft hotel behind us. Dirty windows, but nothing to look at so that's ok. I would definitely stay again. Great location! Great food!
